Buon giorno, bloggers e lettori! Questa è la seconda volta che provo a scrivere questa recensione, ma per un motivo o per un altro mi fermo sempre dallo scriverla. Credo che il fatto che non mi sia piaciuto mi abbia influenzato così tanto che mi fa passare la voglia di scriverne la recensione. Forse. Non lo so. Spero che vi piaccia!

Dopo un periodo difficile, ho deciso di iniziare "Captive Lies" di Victoria Paige. La cover era intrigante e mi aspettavo di leggere un romanzo erotico. Non un mafia romance con elementi di romance. Mi sono sentita, in parte, presa in giro dalla sua cover, che prometteva un genere letterario quando il romanzo che presenta è totalmente diverso. Perciò, vi prego, non rendiamo le cover dei romanzi mafia romance (o romance) troppo simili a quelle dei romanzi erotici. Confonde il lettore.
SINOSSI (DA GOODREADS)
Il ricco e potente Grant Thorne è abituato ad ottenere tutto ciò che vuole e lui vuole Blaire, il bellissimo angelo che gli ha salvato la vita quand'era ferito durante una tempesta di neve. CEO delle Thorne Industries e figlio del Senatore, vive la vita costantemente sotto i riflettori. Convincere una reclusa artista ad essere parte del suo mondo non sarà facile, ma la sua forte determinazione lo rende ancor più testardo nei confronti del suo obiettivo.
Blaire Callahan è fuggita da un passato pericoloso per crearsi una nuova vita, o così credeva, fino a quando una notte salva un bellissimo sconosciuto che mette in subbuglio la sua quieta esistenza. I sogni di una felice vita insieme vengono interrotti bruscamente quando la coppia viene fotografata durante un evento politico. E quando Blaire sparisce all'improvviso, Grant comincia a scavare nel suo passato e si rende conto che la donna di cui si è innamorato non è mai stata come sembrava.
Può una donna, resa prigioniera dalle bugie del suo passato, avere un futuro con l'uomo che ha imprigionato il suo cuore? O il suo pericoloso passato la riacciufferà e metterà a rischio il loro futuro per sempre?
RECENSIONE
Ci sono certi romanzi che hanno il perfetto mix di sesso, sentimenti e sviluppo dei personaggi.
Ci sono romanzi che non riesci a mettere giù, da quanto sono belli. Questo non è il caso. Mettiamo in chiaro una cosa: un libro può avere un uomo alpha, e ne ho letti molti di questo con quel tipo di uomo, ma quando il personaggio diventa totalmente possessivo e ossessivo, non mi piace. Credetemi, questo è un grande NAH per me.
Ma iniziamo dal principio: Grant Thorne ha passato un paio di giorni a fare escursioni su per le montagne con la sua amata e possessiva sorella Valerie, ma poi loro litigano e si perdono di vista nella tormenta di neve. Grant rischia l'ipotermia, ma viene salvato da una gnocca e dal suo iperprotettivo amico, Liam. Le cose si fanno hot sin dal primo momento in cui lui si sente meglio, e lui subito sente il bisogno di marcare il territorio come un cane - questa è la metafora più efficace per descrivere il suo comportamento - come un cane perennemente in calore. L'insta-love è insta in toto per Grant, che decide di convincerla a vivere nella città vicino a lui, a Boston.
Blaire Callahan, d'altro canto, è una ragazza bipolare. Okay, lasciate che mi spieghi meglio: lei appare come fragile e bisognosa d'aiuto, ma è anche testona e cocciuta, e continua a ripetere, per tutta la durata del romanzo, che non ha bisogno di aiuto. Ma lei non è ciò che appare, è la figlia di un mob cleaner che ha anche le capacità artistiche di una paiting camouflager. E' reticente ad aiutare Grant, anche dopo il sesso hot che hanno avuto, ma il modo di lui di convincerla (il sesso) avranno la meglio su di lei. Blaire e Grant, il CEO di un'importante azienda e il figlio del Senatore, in lizza per diventare il prossimo presidente degli USA, avranno una storia piena di alti e bassi. L'ossessività di Grant ha raggiunto livelli preoccupanti quando lui ha messo, con l'aiuto di Andrew, un blood tracker su di Blaire dopo che questa è stata rapita da Orlov, che reclamava vendetta su di lui perché Grant ha ucciso uno dei suoi uomini per legittima difesa. Inutile che vi dica quanto io abbia ODIATO quando Grant le ha messo il blood tracker (che è una sorta di gps messo nel sangue), senza il suo consenso.
Dopo aver affrontato interminabili ostacoli contro la Mafia Russa e non solo uno ma ben due nemici, Blaire finalmente cederà e vivrà la sua ricca vita con Grant. E sono appena tornati insieme, che lui già le dice che non vede l'ora di metterle l'anello al dito e di fare tanti bambini con lei.
Dire che sono delusa sarebbe un eufemismo. Ci sono molte cose che non mi sono piaciute in questo romanzo, e il motivo principale è dato da Grant. Non posso accettare e tollerare un uomo così possessivo e ossessivo - badate bene che non è un dark romance o contemporary, non è nemmeno un erotico - con il bruciante desiderio di sapere ogni singolo spostamento della sua ragazza. Non posso tollerare il modo in cui lui si impone su di Blaire, che alterna momenti in cui è sottomessa e resiliente con lui, quando lui ottiene le cose che vuole da lei con il sesso. Il dramma tra Blaire e l'iper protettiva sorella Valeria (e la backstory di quest'ultima) era irrealistica e allungata al punto da essere brutta e poco piacevole da leggere. Mi è piaciuto quando Blaire ha fatto in modo che la sua voce venisse ascoltata e come ciò abbia reso le cose difficili a Grant. Ma, come ho detto prima, quando lui le ha messo un blood tracker senza il suo consenso avrei voluto prenderlo a schiaffi. Non me ne frega se lui è super ricco, se ha macchine costose e millemila case, che è capace di evitare problemi con la legge solo grazie ai suoi legami politici. No, accidenti. No.
Ho dato a "Captive Lies" una stelle e sono stata fin troppo carina con questo romanzo, considerato quanto poco mi sia piaciuto e il poco (quasi nullo) sviluppo di personaggi che presentava. I quattro POV alternati non hanno aiutato. Avrei voluto dargli non classificato.

With Blaire, the rope around his strangled heart unraveled. It unfurled into his connection that nagged him to explore. He wasn’t giving up on her. She was his game changer. His gut told him he’d never find another woman who would fire his blood the way she did. (…)
He’d never been in love before, but he felt he was on the cusp of something life-altering. The challenge was convincing Blaire that what they’d shared was special, worth pursuing, and not something to run away from.

I felt deceived by its cover, that promised one literary genre, when the novel was totally another. So, please, let’s not make mafia novels (or romances) appear like an erotic novel. It confounds the reader.

There some books that just have the perfect combination of sex, feelings and character development. There are books that you can’t put down, because they are amazing. This is not the case. Let’s make one thing clear: a book can have an alpha male, and I read a lot of them with one in it, but when the character becomes utterly possessive and obsessive, I don’t like it. Really, this is a big nah from me.
But let’s start from the beginning: Grant Thorne has been hiking in the past couple of days in the mountains with his beloved and possessive sister Valerie, but then they fight and lost sight of one another in the blizzard. Grant risks hypothermia, but gets rescued by a hottie and her over-protective friend, Liam. Things get steamy as soon as he gets better, and he suddenly feels the need to mark the territory like a dog – this is the most effective metaphor I could use to describe it – like an always excited dog. The insta-love it’s totally insta for Grant, who decides to convince her to live in the city next to him, in Boston.
Blaire Callahan, on the other hand, it’s a bit bipolar. Okay, let me make it clear for you: she appears to be fragile and needy, but also so headstrong and bullheaded, that she repeats she doesn’t need anybody. But she isn’t what she seems, she is the daughter of a mob cleaner but has also the artistic skills to be a painting camouflager. She is reticent to go with Grant, even after the hot sex they had, but the way he tries to convince her to go with his, will get the best of her. Blaire and Grant, the CEO of an important factory and son of the Senator, in-run for being the next President of the USA, will have a love story full of ups and down. The height of Grant’s possessives will reach worrying levels when he will put, with the help of Andrew, a blood tracker on Blaire after she’s been kidnapped by Orlov, who claimed vengeance on him because she killed one of his sons for self-defense. Needless to say, I HATED when Grant put on her that blood tracker, without her consent also.
After facing endless obstacles again the Russian Mafia and not only one but two enemies, Blaire will finally give in and live her hot and rich life with Grant. And they are just back together, that he can’t wait to put a ring on her and telling her he wants babies.
Saying that I was disappointed would be an understatement. There are many things I disliked in this book, the first and main reason it is obviously Grant. I can’t accept and tolerate a man so much possessive and obsessive, with the impelling need to know every move of his significant other. I can’t tolerate the way he impose himself to Blaire, and she is alternating submissive and dismissive to him, when he gets the things he wants from her with sex. The drama between Blaire and his hyper-protective sister Valerie (and the backstory behind it) was farfetched and stretched to the point to be unlikable, unrealistic. I liked Blaire when she stood up for herself and made things difficult for Grant. But, as I said before, when he put on her a blood tracker without her consent I wanted to slap him hard. I don’t care if his super rich, if he has luxury cars and houses, if he’s able to make things go by the way he wants only because of its political ties. No, hell. No.
I gave “Captive Lies” one star, and I’ve been nice to this book, considering how much I disliked its characters and the little development they had in it. One star was too much for me. I would have given it non-classified.
